Routt is for strategizing and delivering solutions. Her leadership, innovative, and forward-thinking experiences have spanned the private, entrepreneurial, nonprofit, and government sectors. She has leveraged her technological background in many of these settings.
Routt worked at top-tier consulting firms and provided business and information system solutions (strategy, design, and implementation) to Fortune 500 companies. As an independent consultant, she was engaged by world-renowned corporate, research, and educational institutions such as MUSC, SRI, and Panasonic. Karen has applied her private sector skills and background to her political appointment as Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Cambridge, MA.
Her professional experience includes conceptualizing, securing funding for, and managing a start-up and nonprofit health clinic for the homeless and formerly homeless, conducting business development for a Medicaid HMO, and supporting low- and moderate-income seniors through programs she developed and through her technology company, which provided multilingual, scheduled, recorded messaging via phone.
Routt is a board member for Alta Housing, a mid-peninsula-focused affordable housing organization, and TIFFAN, which supports quality childcare provided by family members, friends, neighbors, and nannies. Past volunteering experience includes volunteering for the Redwood City Housing and Human Concerns Committee, Stanford Business School Alumni Association, and the Cambridge Health Alliance. Karen received the Award of Merit from Stanford Associates for her outstanding volunteer leadership at Stanford University. She was named Woman of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – Silicon Valley.
She was awarded an MBA from Stanford University and a BA in Applied Mathematics from the University of Michigan.
